Society's most at risk deserve more

GPs are currently debating whether their responsibilities under the current GP contract should include home visits for patients who are living in care homes writes Crystal Oldman

Primary care nursing in 2015 and 2016

The NHS has once again had a big year. Seeta Bhardwa speaks to primary care nurses on the ground on their reflections and predictions for the next year

How will physician associates fit?

Last week, I visited two friends living in Louisiana - a paediatrician and a district nurse - who left the NHS more than 25 years ago to raise their family and work in the US health sector.

Speaking up for quality

The Health Foundation has been asked by the Department of Health to review indicators of the quality of general practice in England, and they will be exploring how these multiple measures might be developed to support improvements in patient care.

ANPs are a 'perfect fit'

We may be invisible as advanced nurse practitioners (ANPs) in general practice but I would argue that this is because we fit seamlessly into this clinical area and many others.

Beyond the basics: how the role of nursing staff goes beyond the patient

The perception that the job of nursing staff is just to care for the patient is certainly incorrect. These days, professionals face greater pressure to do much more than this, from caring for and supporting family members, providing consultative advice to peers, through to driving best practice standards.

More nurses, more services, better care

All eyes are on the GPs. A recent BMA survey has shown that, frustrated by workload and lack of time to spend with patients, a quarter of GPs are thinking of working part-time, one in 10 would like to move abroad and 34% are considering retiring in the next five years.

Give patients the right advice

The Roman statesman Cicero said, 'Nobody can give you wiser advice than yourself'. This might have gone down well in the Senate, but it would have got him into no end of trouble had he gone into healthcare and said this to a patient.
