Subcutaneous depot medroxyprogesterone acetate

Sayana Press is a progestogen-only injectable contraceptive for subcutaneous (SC) use. It is bioequivalent to intramuscular (IM) depot med-roxy-progesterone acetate (150mg Depo-Provera).1 This type of contraception prevents ovulation. Both SC and IM methods may be associated with loss of bone mineral density, amenorrhoea, weight gain and a delayed return to fertility. Sayana Press contains 104mg medroxyprogesterone acetate in 0.65ml suspension and is licensed to be administered at intervals of 13 weeks +/− seven days. It comes as a single dose pre-filled injector. The injection is delivered into the upper anterior thigh or the anterior abdomen. It should be stored at room temperature.1
