Directors of nursing must be prepared to defend nurses that speak out in the media according to RCN general secretary Dr Peter Carter. He said: ‘It takes a remarkable person to be a nurse and we have to modernise the public's understanding of nursing. Nurses have to work in bad systems that don't allow them to do their jobs in the way they wish. We won't hide from the glare of the [media] spotlight and directors of nursing will have to be prepared to defend nurses that come under attack.'
