The NHS should go paperless by 2018 to save billions, improve services and help meet the challenges of an ageing population, according to health secretary Jeremy Hunt.

In an address made to right wing think tank the Policy Exchange, Mr Hunt said that, by 2015, GP surgeries should enable patients to access their health records online and should be able to email referrals instead of sending letters. He claimed this could save £4 billion, free up staff time, help patients take control of their care and cut inappropriate appointments
