Career Profile - Practice Nurse

Cath Johnson, Leeds, West Yorkshire

Why did you become a nurse?
I never wanted to be anything else and have always enjoyed helping and caring for people.

How has your career developed since you started nursing?
I qualified in 1992 at the Leeds General Infirmary and worked first in elderly care, then spent the rest of my time in hospital-based nursing on ENT/maxillofacial wards within the hospital.

I moved into practice nursing nine years ago and found the autonomy involved in the role very inspiring and liberating.

I have helped to develop the NHS Health Check by participating in the clinical reference group for this project and it has now been rolled out across Leeds.
