What is it?
A guide to shifting the focus of providing healthcare from performing routine tasks and processes to an individualised service, catering for the specific needs of each patient.
Who is it by?
Jaqui Hewitt-Taylor, senior lecturer at the Centre for Practice Development at Bournemouth University.
What does it say?
The book explains that few nurses and other healthcare professionals intend to work in a non-person-centred way. Factors such as priorities, organisational policies, workplace culture and insufficient resources make focusing on the needs of each patient difficult to achieve. It uses examples of scenarios that may be encountered in healthcare settings, such as adult and child health, mental health, learning disabilities and chronic condition management to structure it's chapters. Each chapter examines how a practitioner can prioritise the patient's physical, mental, spiritual or cultural needs to improve their experience of treatment and care.
