Illness during holiday time

Absence
Can holidays be rescheduled if you are ill during your break? Graham White explains

I have just returned from leave. I planned to spend two weeks with family in the lake district. During the first week I became very ill. I returned home and spent seven of my ten days' holiday recuperating. Can my holiday be rescheduled?

The simple answer is yes. Not only can you ask but you must ask. Holidays are designed to give employees an opportunity to rest and recharge from the pressures and stresses of the working environment. This is very relevant in the health sector where many staff work in difficult environments and often well over and above what is expected of them. Evidence shows that delivering compassionate care on a daily basis is physically and emotionally draining. The need for health staff to take time out is crucial to maintaining their own wellbeing.
