NHS Trust HR director Graham White gives an insight into acceptable use of social media for nurses.

Q) I am a community nurse. Is it acceptable to use social media such as Facebook and Twitter and should I allow patients to be friends/followers?

A) Social media enters every aspect of our lives. We are now almost perpetually connected. Every question can be answered in seconds, we have turned Googling into a natural first step in every problem-solving exercise we do. We never get lost, we're never out of contact, we are always up to date on news. Even when we sleep, someone somewhere in the world may be trying to connect with us. The benefits of social media and the impact it is having on society are very real and it is now a natural part of life and work.
