Q&A Shaping nursing's future

Lisa Bayliss-Pratt, director of nursing at Health Education England, discusses HEE's major review of nursing education with Rita Som. She explains how community and practice nurses, along with students, will benefit.

Q) What is the Shape of Caring Review?

We all know that healthcare is going to look very different over the next 15 years due to a range of reasons, including an ageing population, changing patterns of health and disease, the shift to delivery of more care in community settings, advances in care and treatment, and advances in technology, to name but a few. As healthcare changes and as care patterns change, we must have a workforce of nurses and care assistants appropriately trained to meet those needs. Staff want to strive for safer, better care for patients, but they need preparation, support and development to provide consistently good care. The Shape of Caring Review will ensure that throughout their careers nurses and care assistants receive consistent high quality education and training which supports patient care.
