Graham has just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (T2 DM) at the age of 47. He attends to discuss his diagnosis and the future management of his diabetes.
Graham is a non-smoker who consumes around 24 units of alcohol per week. He has a BMI of 30.2 kg/m2 and an HbA1c of 54 mmol/mol. Graham’s working days as a sales representative involve a lot of driving and he consumes sweetened drinks and snacks on convenience foods when the opportunity arises. Graham also eats large quantities of pasta, potatoes and bread in the evening. He used to swim regularly and go out for long walks but now finds he is too tired after work to exercise.
Graham does have worries about the complications of diabetes including the increased risk of severe COVID-19 infection and is aware that his diet and lack of exercise are not beneficial in terms of his diabetes. He would prefer to see what lifestyle changes he can make before trying medication.
