Diagnosis and management of glandular fever in primary care

Margaret Perry details the challenges of diagnosis and complications of this viral infection

Glandular fever (also known as infectious mononucleosis) is an infectious disease caused by the Epstein-Barr virus which is a member of the herpes group of viruses.Although like many other diseases, the condition can occur at any age, it is most frequently seen in those aged between 15-24 years of age, with statistics suggesting that a GP practice with a list size of 10,000 patients may expect to see seven cases of glandular fever each year.1 This article will describe the case of a young male, his presentation, diagnosis, and treatment and will include information relating to a complication found at diagnosis. It is hoped that the article will give practice nurses and nurse prescribers increased knowledge and confidence in the recognition and management of this disease.
