NHS Employers publishes gender statistics

Women in the NHS occupy a larger proportion of senior roles than in other sectors, NHS Employers has said.

The organisation has published infographics as part of the NHS equality, diversity and human rights week, which highlighted the number of women in managerial and senior positions in the NHS. The figures stated that 87 per cent of nursing directors, 69 per cent of HR directors and 40 per cent of chief executives in the NHS were female. The proportion of female chief executives is almost double the proportion in FTSE100 companies.

The infographics also show that women make up 46 per cent of England's working population, but 77 per cent of the NHS workforce.

However, only 24 per cent of medical directors and 26 per cent of financial directors were women.

Paul Deemer, head of equality, diversity and human rights at NHS Employers, said: 'The contribution of women in the NHS is evident in every setting. The NHS probably has more women in senior roles than almost any other sector, whether politics, law, higher education or business. It's still not perfect but there is lots to celebrate, and by highlighting our progress, we can dispel any doubts about opportunities [in the NHS].'
