Alison Byrne, Birmingham

Alison Byrne is an FGM specialist midwife from Birmingham

Why did you become a nurse?
It is something I always wanted to do but I became even more inspired to become a nurse after being an inpatient at Birmingham Children's Hospital. I remember thinking what a wonderful job it must be.

How has your career developed since you started nursing?
My career has changed completely since becoming a nurse as I am now a midwife. I worked as a staff nurse on an acute medical ward which I absolutely loved and have very fond memories of. Although it was very hard work and challenging at times, it was so rewarding. I particularly enjoyed working there at Christmas when I spoilt the patients by doing their hair.
I subsequently trained to be a midwife and have been qualified for 22 years. However, I always class myself as a nurse as well as a midwife. Being a nurse has allowed me to become the midwife I am today.
