Career profile - Practice nurse

Caroline Forrest, Derbyshire

Why did you become a nurse?
I had worked as a care assistant in a nursing home and was studying for a degree in biology and education and wanted to develop a career in public health. A careers advisor suggested nursing to gain health experience.

How has your career developed since you started nursing?
I worked on a renal unit for four years, gaining a renal nurse qualification and experience in acute and chronic care. I also dipped my toe in community nursing and started a master's degree in public health.

After a brief period in acute medicine, high dependency and coronary care, I moved into practice nursing. Although I had thought I would work in public health, I realised I would miss the patient contact and have stayed in nursing ever since.
