How to make a practice outstanding

Helena Frankova explains what can be done to earn an outstanding rating from the CQC

The answer to the question in the headline is there are lots of ways to hit the ‘outstanding’ mark. In this article we explore a few (Box 1) that have been highlighted recently by CQC, with reference to its five key questions.

Are they safe?

CQC’s website provides several examples of outstanding practice. We examined the practices they highlighted which had found high quality ways to meet the new key line of enquiry for ‘safe’: are lessons learned and improvements made when things go wrong?1

A rural practice with approximately 29,000 patients is praised for its open safety culture. It had a comprehensive system which kept patients safe from harm. This included the following features:
