Improving care by enhancing the patient/nurse relationship

A review of 'Communication skills for nursing practice' by Catherine McCabe.

This is a thorough and comprehensive work that covers communication in all its forms between people in healthcare settings, concentrating on the nurse-patient relationship.

It starts with the basics and moves to more complex issues smoothly, aided by numerous clinical examples, and encouraging the reader to participate by the use of a reflective process and various exercises involving the use of a mentor and recording their thoughts and experiences in a workbook.

Its layout is easy to follow, and from the outset, the authors examine communication and nursing theory, looking at how these entwine. They then move on to look at how we communicate, with specific exercises encouraging the practitioner to examine how they, and colleagues, communicate with patients and with each other.
