NHS Trust HR director Graham White offers advice on employment issues affecting nurses

As a nurse practitioner in general practice, I have a patient who has made lewd comments during consultations. He touched my knee on one occasion. What action should I take?

This question filled me with so much concern. Even with the headlines of famous celebrities being jailed, we still see appalling abuse of our dedicated healthcare workers. I believe every general practice should have a zero tolerance policy regarding unacceptable behaviour towards staff. And this should be clearly visible to all patients, making it very clear of the potential result of inappropriate behaviour.

As soon as you feel any consultation is moving towards unacceptable language, comments or physical activity, it is vital that you stop the engagement immediately, take a step back and say politely: 'I am uncomfortable with your actions/comments/suggestions and I require you to stop. I am not prepared to finish this consultation if your behaviour continues.'
