NHS Trust HR director Graham White provides an insight into people and workplace issues.

Q) I work in a busy practice for 37.5 hours per week. Sometimes, I get an opportunity to do additional work. Recently, there has been the opportunity to do a lot of evening work. However, my practice manager has told me that I can only do a few hours a week because of the working time directive. Can you explain how this works and what hours I am allowed to work?

Staff in the health sector work in a very stressful environment and we should all make sure we have sufficient periods of rest and recuperation to remain fit and healthy.
