Home | News European Antibiotic Awareness Day Written by: Alex Turnbull | Published: 03 November 2014 Comment on this article European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD), which aims to raise awareness about antibiotic resistance, will take place on 18 November. The annual event, run by the European Centre for Disease and Control (ECDC), highlights the need for careful use of antibiotics by healthcare professionals to stop resistant bacteria from developing and help keep antibiotics effective for the use of future generations. PHE is running the Antibiotic Guardian pledge campaign, in which healthcare professionals and the public can commit to proactively tackling antibiotic resistance and offers a range of support materials. Resistance to antibiotics is a growing problem. A study published in the BMJ in September 2014 found that 15.4 per cent of antibiotics fail to treat the illnesses they were prescribed for.
