The proportion gonorrhoea cases with resistance to the most common treatment, cefixime, rose from 4 to 9 per cent between 2009 and 2010.
Gonorrhoea is the second most prevalent STI in Europe, after chlamydia,transmitted during vaginal, anal or oral sex. It can lead to infertility in women and is often symptomless and difficult to detect.
