An international task force has been formed to advise the NHS in England on preventing avoidable harm to patients.

The National Advisory Group on the Safety of Patients in England will be chaired by Professor Donald Berwick, co-founder of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in Boston, USA. The group includes experts in all aspects of minimising patient harm, from healthcare management and nursing to sociology and psychology.

Its establishment follows the recent Francis report into care failings at Mid-Staffordshire Hospitals.
