Investigation into claims of NHS privatisation

Written by: | Published:

The Health Select Committee is to launch an investigation into claims the government is moving to introduce 'back-door' privatisation of the NHS.

The committee will examine Statutory Instrument 257 under Section 75 of the Health and Social Care Act. This controversial regulation would impose compulsory competitive markets in the health service, bringing the NHS under EU competition laws.

Pressure group 38 Degrees claims health secretary Jeremy Hunt is trying to use these powers to 'force' GP commissioners to privatise health services.
