Ministerial rethink on 'Dilnot cap'

Ministers are expected to rethink social care policy proposals, announced last month, and to introduce a cap on the amount of money elderly people are expected to pay towards the cost of their social care.

Ministers are expected to rethink social care policy proposals, announced last month, and to introduce a cap on the amount of money elderly people are expected to pay towards the cost of their social care.

In July, the social care White Paper, entitled Caring for our future: reforming care and support, stopped short of outlining how much individual patients would have to pay towards care, despite the independent Dilnot Inquiry recommending a cap of £35,000 last year.

However, as Independent Nurse went to press, it was reported that prime minister David Cameron had revived the idea of a 'Dilnot cap', and discussions were in place to add such a provision to the Care and Support Bill, expected in the autumn.
