A practice nurse development programme piloted in Tower Hamlets could become a model for speedy, tailored training that boosts competencies and specialist knowledge.

Nurses in Tower Hamlets who have completed the Open Doors programme for GP nurses, have enjoyed a 96 per cent success rate of gaining employment in a GP surgery. The programme develops and mentors nurses, providing theory and working knowledge tailored to the specialist role of being a practice nurse.

Participants are trained to manage diabetes, asthma, COPD and other chronic and long-term conditions plus an immunisations and cervical cytology screening.
