Payments made by pharmaceutical companies to nurses and health professionals will be published from 2016, as part of an EU initiative to develop more transparency in this area.

The ABPI said the total figure in 2012 was £40 million in the UK, including payments involved when pharmaceutical companies sponsor NHS staff to attend clinical education events, provide training and development and pay fees for speaking engagements or advisory boards.

The RCN is investigating whether a database of payments would ensure transparency.
