Wes Streeting, MP for Ilford North since 2010, has been named as the new opposition spokesperson on health and social care.

Mr Streeting replaced Jonathan Ashworth, who had served in the role since 2016, who moved to the role of Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions.

‘Delighted to have been appointed as Shadow Health and Social Care Secretary,’ said Mr Streeting.

Mr Streeting announced in May that he would be stepping back from politics while he underwent treatment for kidney cancer. However, he confirmed in July that an operation to remove his kidney had been successful and he was feeling well enough to return to work.

‘This year the NHS saved my life and staff across health and social care are getting us through the worst pandemic in living memory,’ added Mr Streeting. ‘Labour created the NHS. We’ll make it fit for the future.’
