Ebola update

The Ebola outbreak in West Africa continues to spread, with cases reported in Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo. As of 28 August, the death toll stands at 1552, out of 3069 reported cases. The British nurse who contracted Ebola, William Pooley, has made a full recovery and has been discharged from hospital. Mr Pooley was treated with the experimental drug ZMapp.

Mr Pooley was treated with the experimental drug ZMapp. Ethiopian cholera vaccination programme The charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has started the first large-scale cholera vaccination programme in Ethiopia. The programme is intended to protect the 185,000 South Sudanese refugees in the Gambella region who have fled to the area, where the outbreak was been classed as epidemic. Promising vaccine for Dengue Fever A vaccine for Dengue fever has been found to be effective in nine to 16 year-olds. Clinical trials showed a 60.8 per cent reduction in cases of Dengue fever in participants who had been vaccinated. The trials also recorded an 80.3 per cent reduction in hospitalisations due to Dengue fever in vaccinated individuals. Dengue fever is a tropical disease spread by mosquitos. Symptoms include fever, muscle pain and headaches.
