Why did you become a nurse?
At the age of 18, I completed my degree as a registered veterinary nurse. However, I realised how much I enjoyed caring for the people and helping those in need. Consequently, I embarked upon my nursing career.
How has your career developed since you started nursing?
I graduated as a state registered nurse in 1979. I decided to pursue a career in midwifery. I qualified the following year and practiced midwifery for 18 months.
I felt my career in the UK was moving rapidly, so I decided to travel. I spent the following eight years working in Canada, Saudi Arabia and the US gaining experience and knowledge of healthcare systems around the globe.
In Canada, I worked as a neonatal intensive care nurse, and in Saudi Arabia, I advanced to sister-in- charge of a busy acute pediatric surgical department. I spent the next four years in the USA, where I began as an infection prevention practitioner. I subsequently took up the position of director of utilisation management for HCA.
