Why did you become a nurse?
I always wanted to be a nurse but a job in a hospital run by the Bon Secour Sisters, as a teenager, proved it was the career pathway I wanted to follow.
How has your career developed since you started nursing?
I started working as community nurse in the 1980s because I wanted to work with children with complex needs and their families. This led me to undertake a counselling course because I wanted to be effective in listening to, and understanding, the needs of parents as well as offering my clinical experience.
Over the years, I continued to develop my knowledge and skills.
My career has led me into various roles in different trusts where I have instigated and led on projects that resulted in demonstrable changes in practice. I sit on a number of professional steering groups where I have been able to influence practice.
