Appraisals
NHS Trust HR director Graham White explains what to expect from an effective appraisal.

Q) What should an effective nurse appraisal involve?

This question assures me that nursing and midwifery teams continue to seek clarity on the quality of the jobs they do.

An effective appraisal must be done by the manager that sees you most in the working environment and is accountable for the outcomes of your work. Usually this will be one's line manager but not always, and it might be more beneficial to be appraised by another manager or for them to feed into your appraisal.

The length of an appraisal is not as important as the content, although it should last between 60 to 90 minutes. If you have regular supervision with your line manager and regular in-year appraisal updates the year-end appraisal could be shorter.
