NHS Trust HR director Graham White provides an insight into people and workplace issues.

Q) I am going for an interview for a nursing post and have been told it will be a 'competency-based' interview. What is this and what will happen?

There is nothing odd or alarming about a competency-based interview. In fact, it has been proven that many applicants find the process less stressful. More and more health sector employers are choosing this type of interview to ensure they pick the right people to fill their jobs.

Competency-based interviews are designed to ensure you, as an applicant, have a better chance of getting the job. The process helps you demonstrate the required skills and allows you to share how you worked in your previous employment, to help the interviewers understand how well you will fit into the new job.
