Practical prescribing

Molly Courtenay helps resolve everyday issues for nurse prescribers

Q - I am employed as a part-time practice nurse, a position I took up last year. Prior to this, I worked as a senior primary care nurse in an out-of-hours setting where I prescribed regularly.

I have not used my prescribing qualification since 2006 and would like to resume this practice within the surgery in which I now work. What do I have to do to enable me to do this? Are there any refresher courses available? I would be grateful for your advice.

A - First, you need to discuss this with your manager and obtain their support to prescribe.

If they are in agreement, you will also need to discuss the patients for whom you provide care, and identify your continuing professional development (CPD) requirement in order to develop your knowledge and skills so that you attain the necessary prescribing competencies.
